Big week of racing begins with Monday memorial races at Meridian Speedway

MERIDIAN, Idaho – ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway is closed Saturday night, but it’s only to get ready for the biggest week of racing at the historic paved scan0002quarter-mile so far in the 2013 season.

The action fires up Monday with the first of the speedway’s traditional memorial races, includes a Wednesday night appearance by the ASA-sanctioned Canadian-American Western Winged Sprintcars Series and concludes with the final WWS Northwest Asphalt Sprintcar Speedweek races for the BOB FM Diamond Cup XXV on Friday and Saturday.

Monday’s schedule includes to Memorial Day races in honor of two of the track’s former promoters.

The 38th annual Bill Crow 50 puts the NAPA Late Models division drivers to the test for their longest race thus far this season. Current points leader Dylan Caldwell of Nampa, Idaho goes in search of his third victory of the year. The reigning division champ has won 10 Meridian features since the start of the 2012 season.

Caldwell has entered the Peak Stock Car Challenge for a chance to try out for Michael Waltrip’s NASCAR team. Fans can vote until May 30 to try to get Caldwell into a field of 10 drivers who will compete during a three-day racing school for the chance to become licensed and qualify for a professional race. He needs 300,000 votes by the end of the month.

Also on Monday, the Pepsi Sprintcars drivers compete to get their name on the perpetual trophy for the LeeRoy Nelson 40. Like Crow, Nelson was a promoter at the racetrack — in fact, he was Crow’s son-in-law.
