Championship Drive: James Sheetsadmin
As he thrashed to prepare his orange and white racecar, James Sheets had no idea what the 2019 season had in store for him. Sure, the Firehouse Pub and Grill Bombers were designed to be built in a day, but Sheets’ number 66 would hit the track untested and unproven, with the paint still wet.
After a three-week shakedown Sheets rolled into Dairy Days Friday third in the standings, a full forty markers back of point leader Justice Coats. But thanks to a strong second place finish and a slew of bonus points for flying over a front stretch jump, Sheets cut that margin to just 12. Then he debuted his secret weapon.
Sunday’s Tuff Truck competition saw Sheets, now behind the wheel of a hastily constructed black Dodge Ram, tear the left front suspension off his Poor Boy Racing machine. Though Sheets was forced to make an early exit, the racer scored 20 bonus points, putting him in the championship lead.
Coats battled back, halving Sheets’ lead in the division’s next race. Sheets responded with a dominating performance on Eve of Destruction 11, where between appearances in the Backward Race, Gauntlet Chase, and using that big black pickup for World Famous Trailer Racing, he gained 49 more points than any other competitor, and 51 more than Coats. From here Sheets never looked back, scoring victories in four of the division’s final five main events to claim his first title. Not too shabby for a car built the night before race day.
