Explosive Eve of Destruction unleashes chases, crashes, fireworks at Meridian Speedway

by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho – Motorized mayhem returns to ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway on Saturday night for Eve of Destruction 5.2011 jet dragster-Gurley

There will be explosions, fireworks (both during and after the action the quarter-mile paved oval), cars falling out of the sky and the usual fan favorites such as the World Famous Boat Race and the Gauntlet Race — and something called the Crane West Drop of Doom.

To top that all off, Madera, Calif., drag racer Jeff Atamian will bring in his jet dragster, the Beast, rev up the turbine and literally melt down a Hornet racecar.

Oh yeah, there will be racing, too, with competition in the Project Filter Pro-4s, TEAM Mazda Subaru Mini Stocks, Jr. Stingers, Tates Hornets and Thunder Dogs.

Admission is $12 for adults, $9.50 for senior citizens and military personnel with ID and $8 for children ages 7-11. A family pass (good for two adults and up to four children ages 7-11) is $36.

As always, children 6 and younger get in free.

Tickets are available online at www.meridianspeedway.com, giving fans the opportunity to buy and print tickets from home and skip what is sure to be a long line at the spectator gate Saturday night.

Gates open at 4 p.m. with time trials at 5 p.m., and racing at 6:30 p.m.

Eve of Destruction has become a staple at the speedway and one of the hottest tickets of the summer.

Track promoters have added to the excitement of the World Famous Boat Race this year by inviting Tates Hornets drivers to tow in their own boats to do battle with the Thunder Dogs. The driver who has a boat (or part of a boat, in all reality) attached to his racecar at the end of the race is declared the winner.

The Drop of Doom is just what it sounds like. A racecar (sans driver) hoisted high above the racetrack and then dropped straight into the infield. Last year, the car plowed into a van that had been parked underneath the crane.

The Gauntlet Race pits the track’s managing general partner, Adam Nelson, and several of his closest friends against a swarm of Hornet cars. The Hornets pursue the van filled with Nelson and his merry band of melon and flour chuckers around the track in an attempt to gang up on and then corner the larger vehicle.

The car races scheduled for Saturday night don’t take nearly as much time and effort to describe as the other automotive insanity.

But there will be just as much excitement in those races as anything else fans will see.

Boise, Idaho’s Jonathan Hull and Caldwell, Idaho’s Jason Sanders resume their season-long battle for the TEAM Mazda Subaru Mini Stocks championship. Sanders and Hull have won the bulk of the features this season, with Hull bringing a nine-point series lead into the weekend’s battle.

Two former track champions also are in a tight points chase in the Project Filter Pro-4s. Western Idaho Racing Association Hall of Famer Kenny Chandler of Kuna, Idaho, clings to a slim four-point lead over Nampa, Idaho’s Joe Barton, after posting a main event victory the last time the local series visited the track.

Reigning Jr. Stingers champion Riley Rogers of Meridian, Idaho, tries to build on his lead in the four-cylinder division for youths ages 12-14. He has a 56-point edge over Boise, Idaho’s Jordan Kirkland, and Daytona Wurtz of Boise crept into the picture with her feature win the last time out. She holds down third place in the standings.
