Out-of-town sprintcars and boat race await fans in two-day show

by Jon Brown, MERIDIAN, Idaho – As fall approaches, the race dates at ASA-sanctioned Meridian Speedway are dwindling down to a precious few.boatraceaction

And few are more precious than the two nights of racing scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the historic quarter-mile paved oval.

On Friday, the third annual Alan Stroebel Open Show for modifieds will attract the best modifieds racers in the area and beyond as the Intermountain Outlaw Modifieds Series comes out to play with hometown ASA Modifieds.

Shelby Stroebel of Meridian, Idaho leads the ASA Modifieds standings, while Nampa, Idaho’s Jentry Pisca is out front in the Intermountain Modifieds with Stroebel a close second.

The top five drivers in the Intermountain Modifieds — Pisca, Stroebel, Twin Falls, Idaho’s Rick Fowble, Caitlin Stroebel of Meridian and Caldwell, Idaho’s Rosalee Weller — are all Meridian Speedway regulars.

The out-of-town Washington Econo Sprint Car Organization begins a two-day stay at Meridian on Friday.

WESCO features sprintcar drivers from Washington state. Those racers — which include names familiar to Meridian fans such as Greg Middendorf of Snohomish, Wash., and Todd Coleman from Lynnwood, Wash. — usually compete with wings atop their cars.

But for the first time in the nine-race schedule, WESCO will go wingless and race with the local Pepsi Sprintcars series on both nights this weekend.

Friday and Saturday will mark the end of the WESCO season.

In the Pepsi Sprintcars, Star, Idaho’s Tony Ackerland has a comfortable lead over second-place Colton Nelson of Meridian, Idaho in the series standings.

The Domino’s Pizza Legends and College of Western Idaho Professional Truck Driving Street Stocks round out the competitors Friday night.

Saturday’s action will conclude with the ever-popular boat race and a fireworks show.

The WESCO sprinters and Pepsi Sprintcars are back for another night of racing, which will also include The NAPA Late Models, another Legends show, Thunder Dogs and Hornets.

Phyl Zubizareta of Garden City, Idaho, can take a huge step toward a second consecutive Legends track championship with a good showing this weekend. He holds a 119-point lead over Eagle, Idaho’s Zach Blume, who has shown signs of a late-season surge.

In the Late Models, Boise, Idaho’s Travis Anderson recently took over the top spot in the standings after a sweeping a double feature on Sept. 7. Anderson sped past reigning champion Dylan Caldwell of Nampa, Idaho, to assume the top spot with only Saturday night remaining. He holds a 21-point lead over second-place Dennis Wurtz II of Boise and a 22-point edge over Caldwell.

In the Street Stocks, Melissa Weaver of Nampa, Idaho, has all but nailed down a second consecutive track title.

The gates open at 4 p.m. each night with racing at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets for Friday’s racing are $10 for adults, $7.50 for military personnel with ID and senior citizens and $6 for children ages 7-11.

Admission on Saturday is $12 for adults, $9.50 for military and senior citizens and $8 for children 7-11.

Children 6 and younger get in free both nights.

Tickets are available online at www.meridianspeedway.com, giving fans the opportunity to buy and print tickets from home and skip what is sure to be a long line at the spectator gate Saturday night.
