Thrills, Spills Take Center Stage on Eve of Destructionadmin
Saturday, August 2, Meridian Speedway will be ground zero for the sixth annual Eve of Destruction. The night’s action will feature several events outside of the traditional short track racing fare, including a Horntes versus The Gauntlet race, the return of World Famous Boat Racing, and a special appearance by Mr. Dizzy, star of the History Channel series American Daredevils. While the Project Filter Pro-4s, TEAM Mazda Subaru Mini Stocks, Coors Super Stocks, and Tates Rents Hornets do battle on the quarter-mile in search of coveted championship points, Eve of Destruction participants look to claim the crown as 2014 Master of Disaster.
Headlining on-track activities Saturday are the World Famous Boat Races, where competitors try to complete laps with boats and trailers in tow while smashing, bashing, and detaching others’ boats in the process. The last car and boat tandem lapping the track in tact is deemed the winner. Think you have what it takes to be a Boat Race champion? Meridian Speedway is still accepting entries for this year’s crash fest. Contact the Meridian Speedway office at 208-888-2813 for more information.
Tates Rents Hornet drivers face a different kind of challenge on the quarter-mile Saturday as they try to stop The Gauntlet, a lumbering van bristling with a bevy of produce-throwing defenders. With bonus points on the line for Hornet participants there will be plenty of fenders flying throughout the event.
But the destruction doesn’t stop there as Saturday’s excitement also features stunts from Mr. Dizzy. Mr. Dizzy’s extensive body of stunt work landed him a spot on the History Channel series American Daredevils, and now brings him to Meridian Speedway for a special Eve of Destruction performance.
While stunts, jumps, and explosions are the centerpiece of the Eve of Destruction’s entertainment, the traditional racing Saturday night will pack just as many thrills. With the 2014 racing season winding down competitors in the Project Filter Pro-4s, TEAM Mazda Subaru Mini Stocks, and Coors Super Stocks look to Saturday as the jumping point to a strong finish.
In the Project Filter Pro-4 ranks it has been the Joe Barton, Kenny Chandler show as the two veterans have traded wins back and forth all season. Last race it was Chandler’s turn to collect the hardware, and with that win he’s pulled within striking distance of Barton, but he’ll need every available point Saturday to gain ground on the blue and red 58 car.
Mary Johnson has enjoyed a breakout season in the TEAM Mazda Subaru Mini Stock division, scoring two wins this season. But even with an average finish better than fifth and back-to-back third place showings earlier in the season Johnson’s number 33 car runs second to the familiar number 87 of Jason Sanders. Will Johnson be able to close the gap on Sanders with another strong run Saturday?
The Tates Rents Hornets standings were given a thorough shaking last Saturday as Rob Powers and Kodi Newberry distanced themselves from the rest of the points pack. While Powers’ eleven point margin over Newberry and 36 point gap over third place Mike Vester may sound slim, it wasn’t that long ago the top five were within just nine markers. But the Hornet standings are due for another upset as Saturday’s Eve of Destruction offers numerous bonus point opportunities to drivers brave—or crazy—enough to compete in additional events.
