Title Chases Cross Finish Line at Halloween Trunk or Treat Championshipadmin
Meridian Speedway wraps up the 2018 season Saturday, October 27, with the Trunk or Treat Halloween Championship. The Teleperformance Claimer Stocks, Project Filter Pro-4s, TEAM Mazda Mini Stocks, High School Tuners, Junior Stingers, and Big Daddy’s Barbecue Hornets join for one last showdown on the quarter-mile asphalt oval in the heart of downtown Meridian.
Twenty-six different drivers have strapped into a Teleperformance Claimer Stock this year, and after fifteen hard-fought rounds Josh Fanopoulos finds himself atop the season standings with 101 points in hand over Taylor Occhipinti and Pat Tully. That runner up battle heats to boiling Saturday as Occhipinti looks to hold onto his eighteen point advantage over Tully in a 75 lap endurance race.
The battle for the Project Filter Pro-4 championship couldn’t get much tighter, but after a lap one pile up in the division’s previous race it did just that. Brendon Fries leads Kenny Chandler into Trunk or Treat Halloween Championship Night by a slim 24 markers, and with no love lost between the top two title contenders, watch for the sparks to fly early and often as they battle Saturday.
After a strong early season TEAM Mazda Mini Stock championship leader Jayson Wardle has overcome his share of mid season adversity to bring a 53 point advantage into Saturday night’s action over upstart Fred Vigil and 63 over perennial contender Jason Sanders. Another battle to watch Saturday is that for division Rookie of the Year as James Pahl clings to a five point advantage over Andrew Harbeston.
The High School Tuner title fight comes down to Saturday night’s Trunk or Treat Halloween Championship. James Strikwerda leads James Gates by a mere five points, while Arin Flagstade lies in wait just 19 markers back.
Cody Castricone has found another gear in the last half of the Junior Stinger division as he clawed his way past early season dominator Rusty Houpt. Though down, Houpt still has an outside shot at the title, but can’t afford to put a wheel wrong in his chase for the crown.
As he looks to defend the TEAM Mazda Mini Stock Rookie title, James Pahl also leads the overall Big Daddy’s Barbecue Hornets division standings. Will Pahl finish strong and take the season’s final checkered flag, or will Neil Wassmuth, Monica Heath, or any one of the 37 other division drivers walk away with the season’s final main event trophy?
