Eve of Destruction 17 Delivers Chaos, Carnage
Meridian Speedway smashed everything it could find Saturday, August 9, as it celebrated carnage with Dirty Dough Eve of Destruction 17. The NASCAR Modifieds, Boise Bath and Kitchen Company Mini Stocks, Idaho Asphalt Services Hornets, Firehouse Pub and Grill Thunderdogs, and Apex Idaho Drifters lapped the fireworks-riddled facility as they battled to take home the night’s YMC Inc. trophies.
The NASCAR Modifieds forgot about the night’s planned destruction and caused plenty of their own in the night’s first feature. As Dan Doan and Joe Daily battled wheel-to-wheel for the lead on lap six contact was made which pitched Daily headlong into the end of the back stretch wall. Daily then slid broadside into the turn three water barrels while Doan collected James Strikwerda and Titus Clancy in a heap. Doan and Daily would be forced to retire for the evening while Strikwerda and Clancy’s crews affected quick repairs to get them back on track.
The carnage caught up to leaders Larry Hull and Kyle Latham in the closing laps as the familiar foes tangled on the front stretch and ground to a halt against the turn one concrete. Hull and Latham avoided a repeat of last year’s impromptu boxing match as they both refired their machines and rolled away.
This left point leader Brendon Fries in the lead with Tommy Harrod, Alex Duda, and a resurgent Clancy in his rearview mirror. Fries got to the gas pedal first on the restart and roared to the lead as Harrod and Duda tangled on the back stretch. When the smoke cleared and the checkers waved Fries collected his third victory of the season. Clancy soldiered to a second-place finish ahead of final podium finisher Chuck Youngblood.
The night’s second NASCAR Modified feature saw Latham roar to the lead and the victory ahead of Strikwerda, Clancy, Youngblood, and Fries.
The Boise Bath and Kitchen Company Mini Stocks followed Riley Rogers to the checkers Saturday night. Rogers, at the wheel of his Performance Signs, Dallas and Don Mendiola racer, carved his way through the field to take the lead and the victory in a fast-paced feature.
Nick Durbin piloted his Bobby Hill-themed entry to victory by mere inches in Saturday’s wild Firehouse Pub and Grill Thunderdog feature.
Krew Fleischer drifted his way to victory in the Apex Idaho Speedway Drift Competition.
Cody Ballantyne slip-slided his way to the Idaho Asphalt Services Hornet ‘Fun Feature’ victory.
Alannah Trammel punished the water barrel ‘pins’ and took home the Bullseye Sports Bar and Grill at Meridian Lanes Auto Bowling victory.
Ryan Cummings took on the Wall of Steel and toppled it with one massive strike of his bright yellow vehicle.
Cris Endicott hopped aboard a defunct RV and jumped it through the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation-themed infield scene. Not to be outdone, Michael Gann took his Four-X Ford Explorer over the same jump twice in a row.
Jeff Atamian unleashed The Beast on an unfortunate Idaho Asphalt Services Hornet for a quick five-minute car-be-cue that reduced the machine to glowing cinders.
The Gauntlet got off to a strong start Saturday but was stopped by The Swarm of Hornets and Thunderdogs well short of its eight-lap goal.
Fan favorite Bad Company beat and bashed its way to the World Famous Boat Race of Destruction victory. John Deere Green scored master of disaster honors, despite keeping all six of his wheels on the ground for the event’s duration.
The next Boat Race of Destruction will be held Saturday, October 4, as part of the ATS Inland Boat Race of Destruction Finale event. Tickets are already going fast. Get yours at www.meridianspeedway.com before they’re gone.
